Is It Worth Getting Personal Health Insurance?

Save time and get seen quicker

Whether it’s seeing a specialist for a prompt diagnoses to staying in private accommodation while you’re receiving your treatment and having a broader range of treatments and medication to choose from, personal health insurance cover is a great way of caring for your health and well-being.

There are a wide range of authorised and regulated providers registered in England by the Financial Conduct Authority who can provide you with the protection you need.

Private medical insurance is beneficial for so many reasons, but one of the primary reasons why so many people choose to purchase private health insurance is that they can bypass the lengthy waiting times that come with NHS care and get seen quicker.

The sooner you can get a diagnosis and start treatment, the sooner you can get better and get back to your everyday life. With this type of insurance, you’ll see a consultant instead of a GP, and you’ll receive your treatment in a private hospital or clinic which provides greater comfort and flexibility.

There’s also a wider choice of treatments and medications available to private health insurance customers compared to those available on the NHS, due to the cost it places on the NHS.

A private healthcare policy is a great way of getting the benefits of private healthcare without the worry of how you will pay for it, as everything is taken care of.

There are various regulated and authorised insurance providers available with policies that can be tailored to suit your needs, whether that’s in terms of the health issues covered or the locations you can be seen at.

With the NHS burdened by stress and waiting times averaging around 18 weeks, relying on public health services could mean that you’re struggling with an illness or injury for months before receiving the treatment you need.

How Much Does A Personal Health Insurance Policy Cost?

The cost of a personal health insurance policy varies depending on the provider you choose, your age and location, as well as whether you’re a smoker.

But for a typical person in their 30s who doesn’t smoke, the cost of a policy with one of the main UK health insurers, such as Axa PPP or Bupa, costs between £26 and £48 per month.

The cost can be lower or higher depending on a few different factors, such as how many hospitals you want included on your hospital list, your postcode (as areas such as London tend to be more expensive for private medical care) and how much excess you pay.

Premium costs tend to be higher the older you are. For someone aged between 26 and 35, the cost of cover would be, on average, £818.

But this can be as much as double for someone aged between 56 and 65. This is because as we age, the likelihood of developing health conditions or illnesses increases, which increases the chance of needing to make a claim.

The type of policy you take out will also affect the cost – there are usually several levels of cover to choose from.

Basic cover will usually pay for treatment and any associated costs while you’re being treated at the hospital; medium cover often covers outpatient care as well as your costs as an inpatient; and comprehensive health insurance includes everything, including additional costs for surrounding treatment such as physiotherapy.

How Do I Buy Personal Health Insurance Cover?

The first step in buying medical insurance is to compare providers and policies – there are many options to choose from so you should research your options to narrow down your search and find the best deal for you.

A health insurance broker or comparison company can help you do this more efficiently and all you need to do is provide a few details about yourself and your medical history, along with the type of cover you would like.

You’ll then be able to compare deals and costs so you can choose the policy you want and will be able to purchase with that company to finalise your cover.

As with any insurance policy, the cheapest option isn’t always the best – you want to ensure that you have a plan in place that protects you, so try to find a balance between the cost and coverage.

The Financial Conduct Authority provides a list of regulated private medical insurance providers who provide cover that adheres to a strict code of conduct.

It can be easier than you might think to misunderstand what is and is not covered by your insurance policy, so it’s important to thoroughly check the terms of your plan before you purchase it so there are no surprises when you need to make a claim.

Health insurance policies cover you for new health conditions and rarely cover existing conditions or any issues you had before you took out the plan.

Along with chronic or pre-existing conditions, there are also other exclusions with most policies, such as any conditions arising from pregnancy, professional sporting activities and experimental procedures.

What Extra Policies Can I Get With Private Health Insurance?

Most providers offer the option to add additional extras to your policy, which means you can tailor your plan to suit your individual needs. Some providers may include these as standards while others may exclude them, so it’s worth checking whether these types of policies are included when you’re researching different options. .

Extras such as eye care, dental care, homeopathy, mental health support and physiotherapy are all policies

that can be added in many cases.

It’s a good idea to think about whether you would need any of these types of extras as part of your policy when you’re researching so you can check whether they are included as standard or if you’re able to add them to your personalised policy.

The Importance Of Insurance

A private health insurance plan with an authorised and regulated provider, approved by the Financial Conduct Authority, can provide excellent peace of mind when you become ill or injured and need a quick diagnosis.

Private medical insurance can be costly, so having an insurance policy will alleviate the cost of private care while still
